Do you remember when your teacher called you to the carpet as a kid? I have such vivid memories or choosing the color square I wanted to sit on and friends I wanted to sit next to.
I teach second grade at an amazing school. My students come from various backgrounds and bring so much to our room.
My students become my children over the course of the 180 days.
They are curious, energetic, risk takers who love to learn! Our school has about 300 students who come from various backgrounds. We are considered a low socioeconomic school with many students receiving free or reduced lunches. We have great teachers who work tirelessly throughout the year. Like myself, many teachers volunteer their time to tutor, run after school clubs, and collect food and clothing for families.
My Project
There are a few items that are constants in every elementary school classroom. Unfortunately, carpets are one of the more expensive items that I can't purchase myself. Students spend a lot of their day on the classroom carpet. We start our day with a morning meeting. We sit around the carpet and discuss quotes on life, share our "moods" of the day, and share our goals for the day. Later on we meet in small groups for math lessons, reading groups, social studies, current events, and phonics lessons. My students also love to lay on the carpet and read independently or with peers. The classroom carpet is also a great place to play at recess time.
Currently, my students are siting on a carpet that is way too small and was handed down from a teacher who retired.
It is roughly 10 years old . . . that's a lot of kids sitting on a carpet over the years! When I call students to the carpet it is a race because they all want to make sure they get a space and not have to sit on the cold ground. My students and I will greatly appreciate your help in putting a new carpet under us.
