Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will be teaching fabulous first graders in a high-needs community in the fall. Knowing my incoming class, my students are high energy, enthusiastic, and loving. However, my students are also low-leveled readers and, to help close the achievement gap that is very much a reality in my school, we need every resource we can get to ensure academic success.
Typical first grade classrooms have large and comfortable rugs for carpet time. These rugs allow the teacher to better manage transitions from desk to carpet and allow the students their own space during this vital learning time. With a decreased budget, my school is unable to provide this necessary supply.
This classroom carpet will benefit my students in numerous ways. To begin, the amount of learning time wasted during transitions from desk to carpet is astronomical. If I can decrease this time I could spend more time on the necessary instructional strategies to help my struggling readers who are already behind the curve. In addition, this carpet can aid in calendar instruction, as the students can have one more hands on reminder of the layout of the calendar. Finally, this carpet can be used as an incentive for students who behave appropriately. As our school struggles with multiple behavior issues that distract from learning, I look for anything and everything that can be used for positive behavior management. Students will be rewarded for good behavior using this rug through preferred seating and birthday recognition.
