We are an urban neighborhood school and all of our students come from low-income homes.
Students are exposed to gang violence, drugs, and extreme poverty on a daily basis.
They are limited in the opportunities provided to them outside of school hours.
Students come to a school for a safe place where they are able to meet basic needs and feel loved; for most of them, the opportunities that they have at school will help share where their paths will take them. My students come from such diverse and interesting backgrounds. They speak many languages and they or their families come from all over the world.
With new fire requirements, my school does not allow anything to be hung on walls that aren't on a bulletin board.
This creates a challenge for all learners (especially visual ones)!
In fourth grade, we use a lot of reference posters that students have readily available to them right on the walls.
These new bulletin boards will help every single student in my classroom, allowing them access to the resources they have at any time they may need them.
Students will be able to feel more confident in themselves when they have the resources they need and they will be more successful academically!
