"Criss-Cross Applesauce!" This may seem silly to you, but this phrase means a great deal to my 14 Kindergartners. Criss-Cross Applesauce is how we sit on a rug during whole group time. We are looking forward to a fresh, new rug for Calendar time!
Fourteen excited, loving learners greet me every morning in our rural town.
In addition to several other honors, our school, where more than half of our students are considered of poverty, is a National Distinguished Title I School. Our students work hard! Determined and energetic, they face the odds to be readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and most of all good citizens.
Every day, students have calendar time and number sense routines. During this time, we sing, dance, and most importantly learn! My learners use this time to recite the days of the week, months of the year, the weather and more! They do this through song, dance, and discussion. For them, the best part is if you are the calender leader for the day! We practice math fluency and gain lots of number sense during this time!
My Project
We need room to sit, stand, move, and communicate! Aside from all the singing, dancing, and communicating, we will use wipe-off boards and manipulatives on our brand new rug! Our number sense routine time will be much more engaging for students when we all get to sit together. Partner-talk and group talk will be a lot more frequent.
We cannot wait for our new rug!
Having this new rug will create even more positive learning experiences for the children.
We will be able to interact closely and stay engaged. It is bright and colorful just like our classroom. The rug will create a whole group learning space that is comfortable and allow us to be close for optimal listening and discussion opportunities. The rug has numbers on it which makes the possibilities endless for another tool to help these children become fluent with numbers and mathematics.
