Our classroom is a part of the (NCPreK) North Carolina Prekindergarten Program. We will have 18 four year olds. The majority of our students have never been in a structured classroom setting before.
Our students are faced with the struggle of high poverty.
Some of our students are enrolled in the backpack program that a local church provides, because their parents do not have much food at home. Sixty-four percent of the student population is in the free or reduced priced lunch program.
Our school is a Title I public elementary school with about 650 students in pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade.
I have typically developing students as well as students with developmental and emotional delays. I love working with the PreK program and want them to have the best experience possible for their first year of school.
My Project
Four year olds need a place to sit at circle time that belongs to no one else. We can achieve that and teach the alphabet by using an alphabet rug. Each child will have an assigned letter to sit on. This will be their spot for circle time, small group lessons and any time they want to go to their place. We can also use it to reinforce our letter of the week. It has great examples of words that start with each letter. We can use that to start our word wall as we introduce each letter for the week.
