My Students
"Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are." - Mason Cooley
For many of my students, their favorite part of the day is when I read a book aloud to them. They lean forward, wide eyed, taking in everything the book has to offer, and enter the world within the words.
My students are a diverse group of individuals.
They come from many different backgrounds, have different cultures, and are of different races. 60% of my students are African American, 27% Asian, 7% white and 6% Hispanic or Native American. Many of them enter my classroom in the same uniform they wore the day before, and tired because they share a room with their entire family. Even though, they have not had the most ideal life, they always enter grateful for a place that is their home. They care for their classmates and for me in ways that I cannot explain. I am often called "mom" and I care for them as if they were my own children. They truly want to learn and they want to do their best but they have life struggles that can sometimes be roadblocks along their way.
My Project
In our classroom, I try to create a feeling of home and things inside of it are theirs. These are students who don't have a lot of things and if they do, they often have to share them. These book bins will allow them to having something to call theirs for the year and to store the books and journals that they use during our reading block. It will also allow them to stay organized and keep their reading materials together.
This past year, I used cardboard book bins that I got from Ikea and I was constantly taping them and putting them back together due to the books inside being too heavy, or carrying them to and from locations for an entire year.
These new bins will fit the majority of the books and will hold the test of time. The students will have a sense of ownership for these bins and they will have a constant place to keep their books and reading journals.
