My Students
Would you like to sit on a cold vinyl floor to read or to listen to your favorite stories? Do you ever wish that there are more creative ways to help you to improve and get excited with reading and writing? How would you like to enter a welcoming classroom where you can feel learning is simply fun?
My First Grade students are from low economic status families with about 70% of students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Their families are immigrants from China. Most of their parents have minimal education and are blue-collar workers. English is their second language. My students did not get much exposure in reading in their earlier years due to parents' language barrier. School is the only place for them to improve their language skills. My school is a public school in California. We offer Spanish and Cantonese Bi-literacy classes for our K-5 grade students. We believe in improving students' thinking skills. We face many financial challenges every year. Our problems including raising funds to keep classroom teachers, purchasing daily school supplies, updating technology, and purchasing books for students to take home. It's been most exhausting raising funds just to get some basic needs to help my children to have a better learning environment with a variety of learning resources.
My Project
Can you imagine children walking in to their first grade classroom on their first day of school and see a comfortable and attractive area rug where they can sit and read their favorite stories? My classroom has an empty spot with cold vinyl flooring waiting for a classroom rug to be placed for the new school year!
I have requested a classroom area rug, magnetic hooks, magnetic shelves and pockets, and some plastic bins for reading resources. Children need a variety of tools to help them learn. The magnetic hooks will hang different levels Sight Word cards so students can keep track of their own progress. Both of the magnetic shelves and display pockets can spark imagination for displaying challenging writing and reading activities. Students can read sample writing and what other students write. They can also display their own writing as well or interesting reading they have. These fun language tools will help my different level learners to build their language arts skills tremendously.
An area rug should be a basic necessity for any classroom.
All children deserve to have a safe and comfortable place to sit, to read, and to play! I spend a lot of money to build an environment that is most welcoming for our students. I hunt for sales every summer in order to get enough classroom supplies for my 22 students. I want different language tools that can help my second language learners with different learning styles to improve their skills. Please help me help my students!
