A Place for Me in the World of Work

My students need carpenter tools, kids' chef tools, and dramatic play materials that will allow them to explore jobs in our community and connect with them in a meaningful way.

My Students

My students may be small, but they abound with joy and curiosity! I teach 2nd grade in a high-poverty Title I school where all children, including Special Education students and English language newcomers, learn together in a caring, cooperative environment. In addition to students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, I have kids who are refugees from war-torn countries or who have experienced trauma at home, which makes it more difficult for them to excel academically.

In our classroom, kids enthusiastically collaborate and support each other regardless of their differences.

Their compassion for each other and excitement in working together constantly motivate me to find resources which can engage and challenge them. With technology, I am able to show the world to my students, while hands-on experiences allow them to imagine a better future and see their own roles in building the community they desire.

My Project

Our school district is helping students imagine and create brighter futures through exploring the World of Work. In the World of Work, each grade level is exposed to, and learns about, six potential career paths. Through hands-on practice, purposeful play, and interactions with real-world experts, students develop the necessary knowledge to prepare for future opportunities and choices they will make.

I want to help my kids unlock their unique strengths, interests and values to aspire to careers they might never have dreamed of.

My 2nd-graders get to learn about carpenters, veterinarians, musicians, fitness trainers, chefs and software developers. The addition of the woodworking and chef tools, vet instruments, coding sets, and fitness trainer equipment to our classroom will provide my students with the opportunity to explore the World of Work in a fun and realistic way. The career outfits and tools will provide experiences to deepen understanding and increase engagement. The funding of this project will provide my students important exposure to vocations which they might otherwise never experience. In discovering work they are passionate about, each day can be filled with joy— this is my greatest hope for my students!
