Although our school is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, about 50% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged, about 25% are English language learners, and about 50% qualify for free and reduced price lunches. Less than 50% of the parents have had some college or graduated from college.
My students are full of energy, creativity, passion, perseverance, and diversity.
Working with middle school students keeps me up with the latest clothing, music, and video game trends. I am forced to be a lifelong learner when trying to incorporate their interests into my classroom.
My Project
Moving into a new building is exciting, but comes with some transition. In order to establish a place for everything so that everything can be put in its place, high quality organizational materials are needed.
Students need places where they feel safe, respected, and productive.
By having an organized classroom, students will feel a sense of peace and be ready to learn. Clear, rectangular plastic bins which last more than a year and are hard to break allow students and teachers to easily see their contents. These bins are also super useful in a science classroom as there are so many consumable supplies that were formerly stored in cardboard boxes.
Displaying student work with magnets on the whiteboards are more easily done than with staples on a bulletin board in a classroom with little free wall space.
