"He's in my spot!," "she's not in the right place," "I don't know where to sit," or "there's not enough room for me" are the kinds of comments I hear from my students. My students have trouble remembering where to sit on the floor and sometimes there is just not enough room for everyone.
I have a wonderful class of eager to learn first graders on the beautiful island of Oahu.
They always come to school with a CAN DO attitude. Our school is a K-8 grade title 1 school. Many of my students come from large families with lots of siblings. My students are a mixture of Hawaiian, Polynesian, Filipino, Portuguese and Caucasian.
My Project
My students will benefit from a classroom rug that is divided into 25 separated spots because they will each have a place to sit. They will know exactly which spot is theirs and they will feel special! It will also make teaching easier for me and learning easier for them. For me, I will be able to start my lessons right away because everyone will be sitting in their spot ready to learn. I won't have to help them figure out where to sit or how to make more room so that everyone has a place. My students will be able to learn easier because they won't be worrying about where to sit. They will be in their spot with eyes on me ready to start learning. Once my students are able to focus on learning and not where to sit I feel that I will get to teach more lessons and they will be learning more!
This classroom rug will help build a stronger classroom community.
Every student will feel welcomed and special because they have a place where they "fit" in. As a teacher that is one of the most important things I can do for my students.
