My Project

"Please come to the rug." Now, imagine if you were seven years old, looked all around the classroom and couldn't find a rug anywhere! Well, that has been a problem for my Second Graders. Most of them know that it really means the "imaginary" rug where we hold our class meetings.

My enthusiastic Second Graders attend a Title 1 school in the heart of the Silicon Valley.

These students come from diverse backgrounds and include English Language Learners, Special Education students and those from single-parent households. More than a third of all students at our school qualify for free or reduced price lunches. My students love coming to school. Each day, they enter the room with big smiles and leave telling their parents, "I had an awesome day!"

With your generous donation, I will be able to provide my students with their own, comfortable spot on the rug to learn. We spend a lot of time on the floor. We do morning meetings, whole-group lessons, read, write, listen to stories, play games, sing, dance, use manipulatives, work in small groups and use the projector on the rug. Every student deserves to have their own personal space on a soft, comfy rug!

A place for everyone on the rug would make our classroom so special. Students will be free from distractions and would have their own personal space. They will gain valuable learning time because there will be no confusion as to where to sit when transitioning between activities. Students will have more opportunities to collaborate with others, share materials and engage in activities that help them meet the Common Core Standards. Simply put, they will have a soft, cozy spot to sit on.
