My students need a classroom carpet so that we can gather together as a community each day. With this carpet, everyone gets their own place to call their own!
My students start each day gathered on the floor in a harmonious way. We talk about how we will be kind, safe, and productive. We promise to "take care of ourselves, take care of each other, and take care of this place." A carpet with a space for everyone would be an awesome way to begin each day!
The children are a mosaic of cultures from all over the world.
Many of them are refugees whose families have escaped their homelands in search of a better life in the U.S.A. Many do not speak English and I value our daily discussions as a means for them to communicate and become familiar with our language. The carpet time in my classroom is a time of valuable communication.
My Project
Throughout the day we will convene as a whole class on our bright new carpet. The carpet features extra roomy squares so that each student has their own place. In addition to whole class instruction, I will teach small groups on the carpet. Students will also have the opportunity to assemble puzzles and building kits on the carpet.
Having a carpet with a place for everyone will help maintain the harmony among the students in my class.
The children will sit comfortably and have their designated spots. In addition, we will have enriching conversations in this peaceful setting which will have a huge impact on fostering my English language learners to speak comfortably as they learn our language.
