Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school in a very diverse district. In our community, families don't have a lot of money to provide children with a lot of extras. The parents work hard just to make ends meet. Therefore, we cannot ask them for extras for our class.
My students are an enthusiastic group of second-graders in a high-poverty community in Northern California.
They are curious and want to learn. This year we will need to start with the basics - expectations, behavior, organization, etc. This will be my students' first year with their own desks, supplies, and materials since most of them did not return in the spring for hybrid learning. I will need to teach them how to organize their supplies and materials so they can easily find what they need.
My Project
Second graders have a lot of stuff: from workbooks, journals, and folders, to textbooks, leveled reading books, and personal supplies.
There is just not enough room on their desks.
These bags will hang from the back of their chairs to provide extra space for my students to store some bulky items like their reading anthology and book bag. Having this extra space to store their books will make the desks less full, thus easier to find what is needed.
In addition, water bottles are always a hassle. They leave water spots on the desk, they are fun to play with, and they get in the way. The plastic tumblers will be zip-tied to the legs of the desks as a place for the students to store their water bottles. Out of sight and out of the way.
More than half of students from low‑income households
