This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you do your best work when you are physically uncomfortable? I can't and neither can third graders. We need sturdy comfortable replacement chairs.
I work with third graders, some with special education plans and others who are English Language Learners.
The majority of my students have been here since preschool, and, because of this gift of a shared history, we have become a true community. We work hard to help each other achieve at high levels.
Our school is an urban school with more than 400 students from preschool through eighth grade. Our community benefits from racial and ethnic diversity as well as socioeconomic diversity. We benefit from parent and local community involvement, but as is the case in many urban schools, there isn't adequate funding for everything we need.
In 2009, we were designated as an under-performing school as measured by our state's standardized test. Since then, we have implemented many changes throughout the school. While the needs are still great, we have shown such strong gains in student achievement that we were designated a top-performing school in 2014.
My Project
A comfortable learning environment is essential to students' progress toward proficiency. Students are expected to spend a great deal of time doing small group, pair, and individual practice at their tables. We do not have enough appropriately sized chairs in good condition for all the students. Some chairs are clearly too small because they were originally for the first- and second-grade classrooms. Other chairs have seen many years of use and, as a result, are quite rickety and creaky.
The new chairs would allow each child an appropriately sized chair in good working order. Students would be able to sit comfortably for table work without their slightest movement disrupting neighboring students.
Well-fitting chairs are an integral part of a comfortable learning environment, and all our students deserve one.
Your donation will help create such an environment and make it easier for students to do their best work.
