I greatly enjoy teaching boys and girls at the third grade level! Their enthusiasm for learning and care for those around them is what I love best about my students! I teach approximately 25-30 eight and nine year old students. I am reaching out to generous donors that participate with Donors Choose to purchase a classroom rug for my students.
Some of my favorite moments with my students is when we are sitting together at the front of the classroom on the floor sharing our ideas, special memories we've had with our families, or even opening up presents during a classroom party.
This time together provides a strong sense of community. I would like to continue to provide these opportunities for my students with a comfortable and organized space for them to sit and enjoy our time together.
My Project
I strive to provide a learning environment that has a strong sense of community; one where students feel valued, loved, respected and cared for, and an environment where students feel safe to take risks when sharing their ideas and opinions. I have found that some of the best opportunities to create these moments is when I have all of my students sitting together in a comfortable space at the carpet. This feels more like home!
I have also found that my students are noticeably more engaged in our conversations and less disruptive of their peers when we are sitting together near the front of the room.
This gives every learner an up-close experience with our curriculum, and plenty of opportunities to share their thinking when I have students turn and talk with someone sitting next to them. Every voice is heard and every student is given a chance to share his/her thinking in a non-threatening way. While I already have students frequently join me at the carpet, the A Place for Everyone Carpet will provide an organized space for students; each student will have his/her own square, or place to sit. This will alleviate the confusion of where to sit or who to sit next to that often arises in an elementary classroom and can take away from learning.
