My Students

Warren Buffet has said, "Someone in sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." I want my students to see how this quote applies to their lives and the importance of saving money today. We save today so we have protection of our savings later.

I teach a super group of fifth graders.

My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from each other. They use their critical thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They are creative and become excited any time we can incorporate the arts into our lessons. My students collaborate with each other to create final products that demonstrate their learning.

My Project

I am asking for 8 sets of 12 paint your own piggy banks. During the second grade time and money unit, my class will partner with our buddies so that they can each paint their own piggy bank to take home and collect their coins. This will be important for the second graders because many of them are still learning coin recognition and it will give them a meaningful real life way to practice their money skills. At the end of the unit, students can count their coins to see how much money they have saved. This project is important for the fifth graders because it will give them a chance to practice saving money and to find the value in that. All too often I hear my students talk about wanting expensive items, and they don't really understand why their parents don't want to buy them. This project will provide students with a chance to set savings goals and see if they reach them.

This project puts my students and their second grade buddies on the path of financial literacy.

They will be learning at a young age the importance of setting financial goals and then working towards them. They will be planting the tree of financial wisdom now that will help provide the shade and comfort later.
