Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Bilingualism works! Being Bilingual is a plus nowadays. I am a Kindergarten Dual Language Teacher. I teach language in a high-need community to mostly non-Spanish speakers.

My school started the Dual Language Program this school year (2008-09). I am teaching Spanish to non-Spanish speakers as well as Spanish speakers. We are having a great turn-out; students are excited and parents are motivated to experience this new language program in the school. The students are learning Spanish! However, it has been difficult for me and my students to get ideas across without pictures. My students rely on images to capture the ideas and information behind the words and to express their thoughts.

My students need to experience the new language as vivid and real as it can be. The need of a digital camera and a printer will provide the language experience and instruction accessible, understandable, and fun for their little, yet ready-to-learn minds.

Teaching a language to non-native speakers can be challenging, specially when the students are 5 years old. However, with your help, my students will benefit greatly (beyond imagination).
