My multicultural and multilingual students represent countries from all over the world. They speak Kuku, Haitian Creole, Pashto, Arabic, Spanish, Kinyarwanda, and Ukrainian. We don't always understand each other's speech or writing, but we have found common ground and mutual understanding through pictures.
A photo printer will allow us to use images as a starting point for discussions and writing as well as ensure that ALL students are represented in the halls of our school.
A picture is worth a thousand words and when you're bilingual, it's worth twice that! Having images posted around the room and around our school, with labels in multiple languages will promote translanguaging which research has shown not only supports second language development but also promotes positive self-concepts.
I can photograph, objects, animals, and members of our school community to help emergent bilinguals contextualize new vocabulary, internalize new concepts, and negotiate meaning with their peers.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
