This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Communicating is a requirement in my classroom because I am a speech-language pathologist. My students come from a variety of socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds. Wordless picture books will allow them to share their unique perspectives and stories with one another while still giving them a shared context to build upon.

Wordless picture books encourage children of all ages and ability levels to express themselves in ways that are meaningful.

Regardless of their language ability (typical language skills, delayed language, and/or learning English as a second language), their reading ability, or their life experiences, pictures stimulate the imagination and allow a variety of communication skills to be targeted.

For example, is your student working on saying a particular sound correctly in connected speech? Pull out a wordless picture book and have them create their own storyline using words with their sound. Is your student working on expanding their sentence length? Pull out a wordless picture book and model targeted language structures as you narrate a story. Is your student working on telling stories with problems, actions, and solutions? Pull out a wordless picture book and help them identify the story structures they need to clearly and coherently relay a meaningful story.

Wordless picture books have endless therapy potential because a picture really is worth a thousand (or more...) words!!
