Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teachers always want to see the world through their students' eyes. This project will assist in doing just that. By using the digital camera in conjunction with the disposable cameras and laptop I already obtained we can do just that.

My students live in a very economically depressed area that has a high crime rate and an inordinate amount of gang activity.

Despite all of this they come to school every morning smiling and ready to learn. I want to create a lesson in which they can use that optimism and their unfiltered minds to take photographs of their community. I want them to seek out the hidden beauty that the teachers and 'outsiders' miss.

My Project

Almost all of the components of this project have been obtained already. I have disposable cameras, photo paper to print, a laptop with editing software, and an art teacher willing to aid in the project. The camera I am requesting is for teacher modeling of the project and to have select students extend the lesson beyond the minimum goals and standards. These students will learn that there is beauty anywhere and everywhere if they look for it, even in our neighborhood.

This project is important because it involved components that my students have never seem before.

They do not use cameras in class or at home. They have never examined their neighborhood to find the positive aspects. Not only will this project be academically positive, but can work to create pride in their community.
