Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom culture is a busy place, characterized by a shared belief in the importance of learning. I convey high expectations for learning for all students and insist that my students assume responsibility for high quality by initiating improvements and/or assisting peers throughout the lessons. My students are ELL learners in grades K, 1, 2 and 3. The population that this project will be presented to will be in an urban low-income setting. Within this population, there are ESL students that vary in their language proficiency and the language that they speak. Some languages that are present are Spanish, Arabic, French, and Haitian. The levels of proficiency present are mostly beginners and intermediate.

I believe all my students are able to learn English without fear and are extremely motivated.

My students work collaboratively, cooperatively and help each other which allows them to become independent learners. They do not feel like they are in competition or alone. They have a positive and active learning environment which excites them and enhances their successes.

My Project

Visual aids in an ESL environment allow teachers to explain the meaning behind vocabulary words and ideas. In addition, questions can be prompted about the visual aids to enhance students' conversation and lead them to the answer. Visual aids not only help express the new language but also help remind students of the language they’ve learned later on in the school year. When I present a concept using a visual aid, I am giving my students something they can associate with and recall later.

With visual aids, I would be able to teach a diverse range of structures, words and concepts with effectiveness.

Visual aids provide real-life, authentic items for ESL students. There are also tons of games and activities that I can provide my students using visuals. My lessons will be presented more clearly and smoothly and guide my students who are new to the English Language. In order to bring vocabulary and concepts to life for my students, I am asking for a color printer to be used within the ESL classroom. The printer will be used for daily instruction and allow my students with a reference section to go to when they need assistance. Ultimately, I want my students to feel confident in learning the English Language. It will aid them in understanding information that they may not have understood if it was presented to them in other forms such as written or spoken.
