Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

…only if it’s in color. My ESL students come from all around the globe and land in my classroom on the Lower East Side. True to the history of our neighborhood, they work each day towards learning about their new environment; first and foremost, the English language. In addition to the incredible challenge that faces every English Language Learner struggling to make meaning from sounds that are totally foreign to their ears, my students have an additional hurdle to overcome.

Unfortunately, the extremely limited means of these children’s families means that they are lacking exposure to most experiences and concepts that we often take for granted. Places, animals, adjectives, and verbs must be defined before students can own and use these ideas. Marrying visual images to new words is vital in enabling ELLs to become familiar with words and make sense of the world around them.

Words all need a visual to go with them in order to make them come alive for students learning English as a second language. How better to define “snow-capped” than with a breath-taking picture of the contrast of glistening bright-white snow against a majestic blue sky atop Rocky Mountain peaks? Or more simply, how better to define “barn” then with an image of that classic red-roofed building with which we are all so familiar? What I am asking for is a color laser printer and spare cartridges.
