My Students

During the beginning years in a child's education, it is important to provide a warm and nurturing education as well as opportunities for the children to develop intellectually while encouraging individualism which builds self-esteem. The problem is we need some new picture books.

I will be a prekindergarten teacher to 18 children in New York City for the 2013-14 school year.

Most of the children come from low-income families who are struggling to make ends meet. Many of the children do not have their own collection of picture books at home so I want to make these books available to them at school. I plan to send home several books a week and require their families to return them on time and in good condition. Our parents see the importance of reading to their children daily. Parents have a big impact on their children as reading role models. Reading aloud to children is the best way to teach children to love books. It exposes them to language, vocabulary, new information, stimulates their imagination, and exposes them to engaging illustrations. With the present school year ending, I am taking a good look at what is lacking in our classroom. We need engaging picture books. I am always striving to give my students the best possible education and sometimes needed help.

My Project

Our classroom library has a limited amount of books and I would like to add books that I know will appeal to the children. I have taught early childhood grades for twenty-five years and know the picture books that children really enjoy. I have selected books that will capture a child's imagination and interest. The books I have chosen will also keep the children turning pages. I believe that children will desire to become life long readers if they are exposed early to books that appeal to them. Young children love books and to be read to, please help me in my endeavor to enrich their lives with good literature. I have chosen stories that are easy to follow with colorful, engaging illustrations that also invite children's thinking. All of the books are age-appropriate as choosing texts that fit the developmental level of three and four year olds is extremely important. I also like the fact that the books I have chosen can be used to spark a discussion about many topics.

My goal is to provide an enriching environment where a love of learning and reading can be instilled in all of the children in my care.

Another goal of mine is to help children see themselves as readers whether they are reading conventionally or not. I believe there are three critical areas of learning in prekindergarten: story awareness, language awareness, and print awareness. The books I have chosen will help them develop these important early reading behaviors. Please consider funding us
