Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. What unites us is a common pursuit of opportunity and community. This past year has hit us hard in so many ways. It made our strength, project-based collaboration, so difficult. Remote learning, social distancing, students juggling work and school to make ends meet: all conspired to keep us feel as distant as we were physically.

During the height of New York's infections in spring 2020, our school and their families were hit the hardest of any area in the country.

Several staff and many students were infected. We lost a staff member and many students lost family to COVID-19. As the pandemic wanes, we all look forward to the day we will be together again.

My Project

After a year apart, our focus this year will be on reconnecting us all to community, both in our school, our neighborhoods, and the community we and all other living things are a part of. I want students to tell the story of their community in their native languages through images and art in English and their native languages. They will do this at the same time they are using observations to contribute to citizen science!

We will be bioblitzing our neighborhoods around school, and this camera will be an essential tool for students to record the birds, insects, and plants they encounter.

A photo can catch a bird outdoors in a fleeting moment and allow us in the classroom to figure out what species it is and what it was doing. A picture is evidence that can prove what a memory cannot, an important difference when reporting species for scientific record. These photographs will help us be active contributors to citizen science sites such as eBird as we contribute to scientific knowledge about the species in our neighborhood.

The photos we take with this camera will be an essential part of the multilingual writing we will create for our community in the form of field guides and accompanying children's storybooks about urban and home country biomes. Without your help, we cannot get this essential tool. Please help make our return to in-person learning this fall exciting and successful!
