This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 9th and 10th grade English students are unique individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. As a low-income, high poverty urban school, my students arrive at our school from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. We have students who have come from approximately 30 different countries and speak at least 23 separate languages. They bring with them their own personalities, histories, and interests that help make our classroom community an energetic place. While my students face multitudes of hardships, their resiliency is inspiring and motivates me to work hard for them. Whether it is through more materials, unique learning experiences, or simple supports, my goal is to do whatever I can to support them.
What makes these students so amazing is their positive attitudes, motivation to improve, and the ability to use their differences as ways to teach each other.
Every year we work together towards group and individual goals to develop ourselves as better readers, writers, students, and humans. On paper, my job as their teacher is to provide them with the literacy skills they need to be successful in our world, but I find that through our journey together, it grows into so much more.
My Project
As the year goes on we are reading more and more books in class and my students are eager to get there hands on more diverse titles! With our new focus as a class on nonfiction texts, so many are becoming more interested in memoirs, biographies, and informational texts. Additionally, my students spent time researching and choosing titles that they wanted to see in our library. How could I not deliver?
Having books students want to read will help them stay engaged and become better readers!
That is why we need your help with filling our library up with new books. My students spend at least 20 minutes a day in my classroom reading a book of their choice and this would be an incredible help.
Additionally, as the year goes on my students come to trust me for snacks in my classroom. Often students will grab their book, ask for a snack, and settle into our flexible seating space and start reading. The snacks I've asked for fit the variety of needs I have in my classroom. Some students need a pick me up while others have not had breakfast. Any little bit will help!
