Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our special education classroom is a place where students work hard every day to meet their academic and social-emotional goals. Many of our students face challenges that can be overwhelming, and having a safe, quiet space to regroup is essential. We are seeking support to create a Calm Corner—a designated space where students can self-regulate, calm down, and return to learning ready to succeed.
This Calm Corner will include:
• Soft seating (like a beanbag or cozy chair)
• Fidget tools and sensory items
• Noise-canceling headphones
• Visual calm-down prompts and timers
• Weighted lap pads or blankets
• A small bookshelf with social-emotional learning books
• A calming light or projector
When students have a safe place to reset, it reduces classroom disruptions, supports emotional growth, and helps them build the self-regulation skills they need not just in school but in life. Our students deserve a space where they feel safe, supported, and empowered.
