A Peaceful Mindset

My students need yoga mats and exercise balls to support sensory needs during the day. We have incorporated meditation and yoga to start and end the day with positive thoughts and feelings.

My Students

I teach a special education class in a low income neighborhood. I have 12 incredibly talented and bright children with special needs. I teach a group of high functioning students with Autism, who make my heart smile on a daily basis. My students spend time in a general education setting as much as they can to interact with typical peers.

The main goal for each of my students is to teach them the necessary coping and social skills to help them function in society in a way that is most successful for each individual student.

We start each day with positive thoughts about ourselves and review strategies to use throughout the day. Sensory needs and coping mechanisms are met by utilizing different tools in the classroom, such as wiggle seats, exercise balls, weighted pads etc.

I have recently started to incorporate kids yoga and meditation as another way to help students handle their emotions. I would love to have yoga mats in the classroom available for them to use as we meditate at the start and end of each day.

My Project

My students all require support with sensory and social skill needs. We work on these skills daily and sensory input is provided to all students as they need it. Another major part of the class is teaching appropriate and safe coping mechanisms when they are feeling out of control.

I have incorporated meditation at the start and end of each day, with yoga in between, to promote positive thoughts and feelings.

With the mats we will be able to use this strategy more comfortably and they will be able to self monitor and use it as needed during the day. The exercise balls will also support sensory needs while they complete their work all day. They will be able to be given the input needed to aide in keeping them focused and on task.
