Hello, I am a fourth grade teacher at Nicholson School in Chicago, IL. There are three fourth grade classes with a total of 60 students who receive free or reduced lunch. All the teachers work together corroboratively with our lesson plans as well as switch classes to teach students. We are in the middle of the school year in which a majority of the students need to have exposure to science related activities to raise their test scores. The students face daily challenges as a result of their environment. Therefore, students don't have the financial resources to participate in field trips that will help their intellectual growth and development. As a dedicated teacher, I am trying to improve my students' test scores by providing a trip to the Shedd Aquarium so the students can see first hand how different mammals live and learn about their ecosystem. This will give students that are visual learners an opportunity to better understand the lesson. It will give the students who have never had the experience of going to the aquarium an opportunity to explore. More importantly, it will help the students relate more to different lessons in science once they have the chance to see the aquarium for themselves. I think it is very clear how important a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium would be to the students. They would greatly benefit from a field trip that provides an alternate way of learning and connecting to science lessons. Please give our students the opportunity to experience this field trip. The students would be thrilled to find out they will have an opportunity to go to the Shedd Aquarium. It will give them the inspiration that they need to know that people really care about their education.
