My scholars are quirky, passionate, and energetic learners who value their education and have the determination to succeed and achieve. They're very curious about the world around them. They literally line up and devour any extra information and enrichment activities we give them. "Whoa, Ms. R. You have books about what we're learning in social studies in your library, too," one exclaimed last year.
My fabulous scholars are extremely dedicated to their education and taking control of their own lives.
We are constantly working to find more time to push ourselves academically and to close the achievement gap. All of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and 80% of them are African-American or Hispanic.
My Project
Especially in today's world, my inquisitive 7th and 8th graders frequently have questions about government and the workings of our society. Unfortunately, it's a topic that hits very close to home for some of them, for myriad reasons.
I want our literacy curriculum to be relevant to my students and to help them make sense of the world around them.
Because my students will grow to be the leaders and shapers of our society, I want them to begin to tackle big questions starting now, like: What is power? Who should wield it? For what purpose? As such, I want to add the novels "Freedom's Children" and "Lord of the Flies" to our curricula. I can already imagine the fierce debates and rich dialogue these books will spark.
Additionally, I know the novels will coincide beautifully with their study of the U.S. Constitution and global governments in Social Studies, making a fantastic cross-curricular experience.
Please help my students get their hands on compelling literature that I know they'll remember forever.
