This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are a 9-12th grade mix of students who qualify for IEPs. Their learning disabilities are many and varied, but all come to my classroom for education delivered in ways that target their specific learning needs. We do a lot more hands-on work than many of their regular-education peers do and cover a wide range of presentation styles/modes. I have used interactive notebooks in the past and want to do so again, but gathering the materials can get difficult.
My graduate research showed that use of interactive notebooks had a significant positive impact on overall academic performance, quarterly failure rates, and credit recovery applications.
This coming school year, I have petitioned for and received permission to change my freshman course from biology to physical sciences, a subject more in line with the mathematics they learn in 9th grade as well as the science experiences they may have had in primary/middle school. All I need is to get the gear together.
Interactive notebooks allow students to create a living artifact that grows and changes throughout the school year, serving as a tangible reminder of their progress. It provides a single location for note-taking, study materials, vocabulary activities and creative doodling, all in a package that fits in one or two single-subject notebooks. The supplies listed here, including notebooks, cutting mats, and glue, will support 40 or more students in creating interactive notebooks for a full school year.
