Some of my students do not feel they are good at reading and avoid books at all cost. But boy do they love computers. I am hoping that by using an ereader I can hook them with the technology and I can peak their interest and bring literacy into their lives!
I teach 6th grade Language Arts.
I have four classes of gifted students and one class of regular and low education students. We are a magnet gifted and talented school based in North Carolina. I have many non reading students. Children can not become better readers with out reading! They are great children and want to please me in everything they do.....except reading.
My Project
I want to enrich my student's lives. Too often we use the same materials we have always used. I want to think outside the box. Current sixth grade students have always had access to the Internet and computers. We, as teachers, should utilize their vast technology knowledge in our classrooms. I would like to purchase ereaders for my struggling students. I would like to get a three now and keep data to see how student performance and engagement changed.
Ereaders can be updated instantly and universally, with little lead time. Most books can be "lent" from a library, thereby, reducing costs.Struggling readers will blossom if you give them material that is so interesting they can’t resist reading it. That’s the trick: finding something so compelling that students forget they are reading. The ereader will help to motivate non readers to read. I would like to purchase 3 Barnes & Noble NOOK The Simple Touch Reader™ for my classroom.
All children should be successful in school.
If my struggling readers do not become better readers....they will continue to struggle in school. We need tools to motivate the non readers to read. Please help me to help my non readers begin to love reading.
