A Nightmare to Remember

Help me give my students a nightmare to remember by sharing the concept of Halloween, and the history of this event with "The Nightmare Before Christmas" party with shirts and decorations!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Engaging students in learning is key to students internalizing skills and content. Students also benefit from learning about different cultures and customs, especially when most of my students are insulated in their community, which is largely Hispanic. Having exposure to other cultures, customs, thoughts, and beliefs, provides the opportunity for personal growth and the ability to interact once they move on to college and/or the world of work.

"Nightmare Before Christmas" is a movie that plays on various customs and thoughts, and can be used as a springboard for teaching historical background, various beliefs, legends, and stories around All Hallows Eve, Halloween, and Christmas.

Celebration will include t-shirts exclusive to this class to showcase what we are doing and create classroom spirit. Students will have a physical token of this event they can share with their classmates and family.

Using the lights, the door decoration, the jars, blow up, and banner, I will create a thematic classroom, and use the photo banner to take pictures. Students will have learned about the different beliefs about Christmas and Halloween through 3 lessons prior to watching the movie, and the movie will be used to celebrate the mini unit the students have worked on. The goal is to show this on Halloween, and I will bring in snacks and drinks, dressed as Sally as the celebrating culminating piece of how cultures and beliefs can be brought together in a movie, and provide a space for the students to also have fun.
