My Students
Mrs. T., the computer isn't working again today! Can't you just buy a new one?
My students are frequently frustrated by our lack of dependable technology in our classroom. We have one student computer that works most of the time and one student computer that is not working any of the time.
Our Title I school has approximately 550 students enrolled this year.
The school is over 50 years old. We're located in rural Alabama where much of the employment is agricultural or military-related. This is the second year our state educational system has been in pro-ration. There are no funds accessible to teachers for use in purchasing new technology.
Our students are predominately from low-income homes. The majority of students are eligible for free and reduced lunches.
Many of the students live with only one parent, or are being raised in the homes of relatives.
My Project
The Acer Netbooks will allow the students in my class to have greater access to technology. Less than half of my class of 21 students have computer access at home. The use of the computers at school is a vital link to the world of technology. Computers are used daily in our classroom for research, instruction, remediation, and Accelerated Reading.
The Netbooks will also allow portability. There are no laptops available for student use in our school. With the Netbooks, students will be able to work in cooperative groups, while accessing the Internet. The size of the keyboard will work well for my fourth-graders, too.
Reductions in state funding have left our school system without adequate funds to add to or replace technology tools.
The Netbooks requested in this project will allow students to increase their daily use of technology. The Netbooks will: provide tools for remediation of reading and math skills, provide creative writing opportunities, encourage the search for knowledge through research, and more!
