Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a new second-grade teacher in Brooklyn, New York. Since I am just starting out, I don't have many supplies for my classroom. Some of my students are English Language Learners and about 95% receive free lunch. In our school, we follow the workshop format to teach reading. While I work with a small group of students, the rest of the class is working independently and cooperatively in reading/writing centers. Centers provide valuable learning experience, and center time is an important part of each day. However, literacy centers also require some supplies to help the students to work most productively. I am requesting funding to purchase a variety of supplies for my literacy centers that include pocket charts that students can use to practice specific skills we are working on, pointers that my students can use to read environmental print around the classroom, and alphabet stamps that can be used to practice spelling word-wall words. I am also requesting a tabletop writing center that will be useful for my students because it will allow for easy access to writing materials to compose letters, write stories and illustrate books.
