A New Take on Non-Fiction

Help me give my students non-fiction books that are current, accurate, and high interest.

My Project

In my classroom, I teach 25 fifth graders on a daily basis, as well as around 20 other students who visit me for their literacy block. My students are bright and passionate people, who have a variety of backgrounds, interests, and curiosities.

These new and varied high-quality non-fiction books will open up a new world of information for my students, allowing them access to diverse voices and knowledge that they've always wanted.

The books on this list focus primarily on science and history, two subjects that students may not have as much access to, despite their important role in college and career readiness. As our curriculum pushes to have a greater focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math as a way to prepare students for key careers in our current economy, it's more important than ever to expose them to the range of topics in those fields.

Students will use these books to explore their interests and learn more about the world. During our literacy block, students will have full access to these texts as well as the rest of our classroom library. They'll be able to use sustained silent reading time to develop their comprehension, decoding, and close reading skills. In past years, this independent practice has been fairly restricted to the fiction novels available in the classroom. These novels allow the kids to transfer their existing skills into a new setting, to further deepen their understanding.
