Step into the classroom on any given day and you will most likely see my students reading. We spend a large chunk of each class period actively reading - independent books, literature circle books, shared reading texts, articles... you name it.
My students are enthusiastic readers who are always on the hunt for new and exciting texts.
They are also developing their capacity to produce strong writing, from short stories and poems to informational and argumentative essays. As writers, my students take inspiration from their own lives and from mentor texts of all kinds, including books and films.
The classroom library is one of the most important spaces in my classroom. Students have constant access to high-interest books right in the classroom, which is a crucial element in building their reading lives. It is also a work space for students to complete classwork in comfort.
The atmosphere in my classroom library needs some love.
Our rug is a hand-me-down from another teacher, and it has gotten threadbare as students use the space. I would love to refresh the space with a new rug, so students continue to love using this space. I think students will be even more excited to use the classroom library with a refreshed atmosphere from a new rug.
