A New Novel for a New School Year

Help me give my students a class set of Alan Gratz’s YA novel “Refugee.”

My Project

Help my students deepen their empathy and critical thinking through reading and discussing the historical fiction book “Refugee” by renowned young adult author Alan Gratz. The novel interweaves the stories of three very different children who all share the experience of fleeing their homeland: one from Nazi Germany, one from Syria, and another from Haiti.

Because the characters are kids, they are relatable to my students, even if their own stories are very different.

I am also excited to create writing projects in which my students get to tell their own stories, using the novel as a kind of mentor text!
