My Students
Yipppeeee for a new me! Healthy and fit is the way to be! Everyday kids and adults struggle to stay healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I want to teach my kids how to be independent at keeping their bodies healthy, but lack to materials and books required.
My students come from one of the lowest 10% performing schools in CA.
We have the highest amount of absences and suspensions. Our school used to be the school that was the "last choice" when teachers were asked to choose a school. Our students live across the street in a public housing development where even their parents had grown up and also attended this same elementary school. Families have seen teachers come and go while giving up on their kids and their learning abilities.
This year, my principal hand picked a group of teachers who want and are dedicated to inspiring and engaging the minds of our wonderful group of students. In just half a year, our students and parents have seen tremendous changes in the way our teachers have dedicated themselves to providing a positive atmosphere at our school. We are a thematic based school and my grade level is choosing to teach our kids about staying healthy. However, we do not have any materials to do this.
My Project
I will work on teaching how to live a healthy lifestyle by being educated about what foods are healthy for your body. We will go over different exercises and read a different book about fitness each day. Kids will participate in small group activities where they have to sort different food groups, play bingo with the food pyramid, learn new vocabulary and use smart board technology activities to engage them with nutrition games!
This project is very important to me because my students come from a community where it is okay to eat a bag of chips for breakfast and swallow a bag of cool aid for lunch.
They sell candy from their homes for fun and do not understand the difference in protein, veggies and fruit. My passion is working out and I am so eager to teach my young first graders about how they can stay healthy on their own by being educated and participating in fun activities involving healthy foods and exercise!
