Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My freshmen, passionate and eager to learn, attend an urban school where access to books is severely limited. Despite their creativity and curiosity, they lack the print materials necessary to engage with literature on a deeper level. In an underfunded school, quality reading materials are essential for fostering literacy, yet many students do not have access to books at home. Having these resources in the classroom will be transformative for their academic and personal growth.
Great literature can open doors to new worlds and change lives.
I am requesting a collection of Penguin Classics to serve as the foundation for our literature curriculum. Canonical works like The Great Gatsby, Jane Eyre, and Frankenstein will expose students to important themes such as identity, power, and morality, encouraging critical thinking and deeper discussions. These books will help broaden their perspectives and engage them in meaningful conversations about history and society.
In addition, a class set of Into the Wild will be used for a project on self-actualization, inviting students to explore their own values and ambitions through literature. By reflecting on the life of Chris McCandless, students will see how literature can relate to their own experiences, making it more personally meaningful.
My goal is to foster a lifelong love of reading while helping my students improve their literacy, critical thinking, and empathy. With access to these classic works, my students will see themselves in literature and experience the transformative power of reading. This project will give them the opportunity they deserve to thrive as learners and individuals.
