A New Diverse Library to Foster Lifelong Readers

My Students

My students reflect the cultural richness of New York City - and they speak 34 different languages among them!

Our school is an academically rigorous, tuition-free high school and college associate's degree program.

Many of my students are the first in their families to attend college. They are very eager for the opportunity to earn two years of free college tuition at the time of their high school graduation.

It is incredibly rewarding to work with such curious, eager and motivated students.

My Project

When students walk into our library in September 2018, I want them to see brand new, beautiful books on display -- critically acclaimed books by diverse authors who reflect the cultural richness of our students' backgrounds. This collection includes New York Times Bestseller books.

I want my library to be fresh, new and welcoming for new students.

Our library budget does not allow for us to purchase many books for pleasure reading. This project makes it possible for the library to encourage students to read for fun. Students will develop new reading comprehension skills, develop vocabulary, and learn about other cultures through these extracurricular reads.

The books on my wish list include "An American Marriage: A Novel," by Tayari Jones, an Oprah Book Club pick that explores the story of an African-American man who is falsely accused of a crime, and incarcerated when he is newly married. "The Map of Salt and Stars" is a debut novel about a Syrian family. I also have a number of high quality young adult novels, such as "Children of Blood and Bone," a West African-inspired fantasy novel. Some humorous novels such as "Crazy Rich Asians," and best-selling poetry such as "Milk and Honey," and thriller/mystery books like "The Woman in Cabin 10," will keep our collection lively, current and relevant.

I want students to feel compelled to borrow lots of books and feel connected to our library from day one. Thanks for helping students forge a great relationship with their library, and foster a lifelong love of reading!
