Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many that are not familiar with the popular "Dia de Muertos" tradition believe that it is a day to honor and worship death and evil. In reality it is a beautiful tradition in which loved ones are remembered and loved. It is said that those that have passed away visit us on this special day. The living, place their loved ones favorite, foods and snacks on the "ofrenda" with pictures of those that have departed.

It is a night full of love and happy memories, honoring the life of those that have passed away while remembering the happy memories and talking about their life.

This is a tradition that people form Mexico and many Latin American countries celebrate.

Our school has enrolled many immigrants in the past year. Newcomers to the USA who are having a difficult time adjusting to their new world. By celebrating their cultures and traditions, we are honoring them and allowing them to slowly adjust to their new country.

We recently had a project funded for items to make an "ofrenda" for the day of the dead. Along with acknowledging my immigrant students culture through the "ofrenda," I would also like to make shirts for them to use on this day. Shirts with sugar skulls and other prominent Day of the Dead figures. I already have a printer and the necessary sheets for printing the designs for the shirts. We now need a heat press and ink to transfer the design onto the sheets and then press them onto the shirts. My students will feel pride in representing their culture through the shirts that these items will help us make. They will feel represented and know that their culture is not lost now that they are living in a new country.
