I work at a very small school in a small, rural town. We have a very diverse community. Some of my students come from middle/upper-class families, but a majority of our students come from lower income families. We have a very tight budget and a majority of the teachers spend their own money to make sure their students don't go without. Although finances can be a struggle for a small school like ours, our community is the best. The love and support our school gets from the community are wonderful. We may be small, but we are mighty!
My Project
In the past year, I've done research on flexible seating. Flexible seating is a new twist on the everyday table and chairs. Flexible seating is basically unique chairs/seats that meet the children's needs. I'm requesting "wobble" chairs, exercise balls, and floor cushions. These seats allow children to move and promote attention and focus. If a child needs to focus more in class, I would suggest an exercise ball. Or if the child was seeking movement, I would suggest the wobble chair. The mats are also great because the kids love to use them on the floor when they read!
Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, last year I received a few chairs to try out in my classroom.
They were a huge hit and the kids were very excited to use them. The students loved the wobble chairs, floor cushions, and exercise balls. These chairs improved their posture, enhanced their focus, and are much more comfortable than the typical chair.
After seeing the improvement in my class and the students' excitement to "sit", I want to provide all of my students with an opportunity to try a chair to meet their own individual needs.
