Down in the South, Louisiana that is, we love to read! It is a favorite past-time of just about anybody you talk to. Lucky for me, I not only enjoy reading, but I get to teach it to 120 eager-to-read seventh graders! My school and my state encourage and require daily silent reading in the English-Language Arts classroom. I have quickly come to realize in my four years of teaching Reading, this not only improves a student's reading skills, but it increases their comprehension level in all subjects!
Seventh graders are at a very crucial age in their lives. They are facing many obstacles such as peer pressure, hormonal changes, a desire to "fit-in", and academic and ability performance. Solutions to their problems can be found when they are encouraged to read and they find themselves deep into the heart of a good book. Unfortunately, books can be expensive and not always readily available. This is where the classroom library comes in to play and provides that good book to every student during a daily silent reading time.
Due to difficult economic times, salaries of parents, teachers, and other school faculty is limited. If we want our "future" to become better readers, it is up to us to pull together and combine our resources. While I have provided a minimal classroom library for my students, the need for more books is still there. Providing more of a selection and variety of books within the classroom can certainly benefit students by peaking their interest and encouraging a lifetime of reading.
Your assistance in providing classroom books to my students will ensure the care and concern for their reading abilities, and make it possible for them to develop a continual love for reading and the support a good book can provide.
