This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year, our school underwent a major change! This meant that now our classes are filled with multilingual learners. These means that our classroom library needs an upgrade. Many of the books we currently hold are in English only.
We wish to provide students with books in their own language and books that reflect who they are.
Currently we are hosting a book club during our lunch period. In this book club students are practicing their reading stamina. Many of our students have been in the country for less than a year... This means they need to have the required reading stamina, English skills and vocabulary to pass an exam given to native English speakers.
We have found that the best ways for students to engage with reading is doing it in community. We also believe in translanguaging, and we know students can build their stamina by reading books in their home language. As well as building vocabulary with us during these reading club meetings.
We hope that with these books students genuinely enjoy reading and that they are not only able to learn more English, but that they can find solace in books and stories that reflect their experiences!
