This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our neighborhood in San Diego is a low income area, faced with many challenges. Beyond that though it is a diverse and vibrant area. Our school is primarily Hispanic and we have a large refugee population. Many students are faced with socioeconomic challenges. Most of our student rely on free or reduced lunch. For many of my students English is their second language, which creates its own challenges. Also, we have an array of special education students in my class.

My students have a lot of hope and many of them have big dreams of going to college and moving into careers.

These students show up everyday ready to learn. When they are engaged, they are unstoppable.

My Project

Many of my students have low Lexile (reading) scores and we as a school are working on getting students to read within their Lexile range to increase their levels. Students enjoy reading when they are reading books they are interested in. I am trying to create a classroom library that is diverse and interesting to them.

These students want to learn, it's just about finding texts that engage them.

For example, we just read Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian." Students were so engaged. They loved the book and the discussion and insight they offered was inspiring.
