Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Middle school students learn best when they don't have to spend the entire day in hard, plastic seats. In my classroom, I transition between activities that have them sitting, standing, moving around the room, and finding ways to make themselves comfortable when they settle in to work. My room engages the senses with live plants, subtle scents, and soothing music. At the moment, however, I still have to rely on harsh fluorescent bulbs overhead and low, standard-issue chairs for most of my seating.

Your contribution to this project will improve the lighting in my classroom, improve storage, and give students more comfortable places to sit.

Backless, upholstered benches will allow young students to work together in multiple configurations, and will help them relax during independent reading time. Individual, portable tray desks will provide them options for creating their own work stations. None of these features are possible on a typical classroom budget, but all of them would improve the learning experience for students, giving them greater opportunities for flexibility and focus.

Mr. Gilman-Frederick will only receive his materials if this project is fully funded by July 20.
