My Students

Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. Sixty-eight percent are Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian, and 1% multiracial.

Our school community supports the whole student academically, physically, and emotionally.

By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.

My Project

I have always loved reading and that came to full bloom when getting a degree in English (in reading!). Some of my favorite books are those that I was introduced to in college. For those of my students who are avid readers, but still just in elementary school, I've found a way to introduce them to the classics in a more age-appropriate manner!

Manga and graphic novels provide unique interpretations of classic literature from some of my favorite writers like Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and Charlotte Bronte.

Even my reluctant readers who rely on graphic novels or have a love of manga will gravitate to these books. I hope to round out the high end of my classroom library with these books.
