This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a recovery school for high school students in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. They are all involved with a twelve step programs designed for teenagers. The day to day focus on remaining sober is paramount to their education.

My students have often been away from school for a long period of time and are not always motivated to learn when they enter Archway.

My goal is to provide them with materials that not only relate to their life experiences, but also engages their interest. Consider that their former "highs" from drug use often provide a difficult relative baseline of what avoiding boredom feels like. It is a constant challenge to find materials that they can relate to and that also engage their interest.

My Project

My students frequently do not relate to many works of fiction we read in class. It can be challenging to find works that are funny but also serious, with a message that speaks to them.

Fox 8 is just that sort of novel.

It is a darkly comic short story about the unintended consequences unleashed by our quest to tame the natural world. Fox 8 has always been known as the daydreamer in his pack, the one his fellow foxes regard with a knowing snort and a roll of the eyes. That is, until he develops a unique skill: He teaches himself to speak “Yuman” by hiding in the bushes outside a house and listening to children’s bedtime stories. The power of language fuels his abundant curiosity about people—even after “danjer” arrives in the form of a new shopping mall that cuts off his food supply, sending Fox 8 on a harrowing quest to help save his pack.

I read my personal copy to one of my classes at the beginning of the year, and they loved it. They literally both laughed and cried. This novella makes just the sort of emotional connections and moral lessons that resonate with my students. I would like a class set so that we can more easily develop lessons around the book.
