A Modern American Master, Stephen King

Help me give my students something they love to read...Stephen King! I am asking for multiple copies of "The Shining", "Carrie", "Misery", "It", and "The Stand" for student choice reading.

My Students

This project will benefit approximately 150, 10th grade Advanced Placement (AP) Literature students in my diverse, urban classroom. Coming from all cultures and walks of life, they are curious, lively, smart and unbelievably motivated. Students enroll in this advanced class because they chose to do so. It is a difficult class, and for most, is their first experience with learning how to think. They are used to memorizing materials and spitting answers out on tests, but this class teaches them how to analyze and reason. We practice critical reading, thinking and discussion and it is amazing to see how students open up, discover how smart they are and learn how to express themselves intellectually. Literature teaches history, human thought and reasoning and exposes them to different perspectives and ways of life. They love it. I do too.

My Project

I teach Advanced Placement (AP) Literature in an urban school where the book budget is very limited. We read a lot of classics like Sophacles, Shakespeare, Rand, Conrad, Hemingway, Shelley and more. That is important.

However, when students get to choose their own books for choice reading, they have very few options that meet AP's "author of literary merit" requirements that also get them excited to read.

That's where Stephen King comes in.

Recognized by the Library of Congress for promoting literacy, winner of the Hugo, the O. Henry, the American Library Association YA award, and by the Horror Guild Award year after year, there is no question that he is an author of literary merit. Students love Stephen King and this project purchases five of his best-loved novels for the students to share. Please help me get good books into the hands of my city kids.
