My students need an iPad Mini to help support them in learning English and expanding their academic vocabularies.

My Students
My students are a mix of Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students who love to learn and play. My school is over 70% reduced or free lunches. My class is 72% second language learners and also includes students with disabilities. My students are excited to learn and love using technology during their school day. They benefit from multiple exposures to correctly pronounced English letter sounds and academic vocabulary in a variety of settings.
My school has been in this neighborhood for over 70 years.
I attended this school myself and teach in the same classroom I was in back in 1965! The school remains a fixture in the neighborhood, playing a greater role than ever in the lives of the children in the neighborhood with a before school and multiple after-school programs. We service a large immigrant population with four home languages spoken within my 25 student class.
My Project
My students love practicing letter sounds and learning new vocabulary on my 6 year old desk-top computer and 7 year old iPad. Unfortunately, both are glitchy and won't run all the newer versions of the apps I use in my class. This iPad mini will allow me to differentiate specific academic supports for my students who need extra practice and to enrich the whole class experience by streaming Mystery Science and other great programs over my ELMO. It will also allow all students to access technology within my classroom at least once a week and more often as needed.
It is important that children learn that iPads are great for learning, not just playing!
It is wonderful to listen to them practice their pronunciation of letters, particularly vowels which are very difficult for many of their parents to help them with. There are many great programs such as Starfall and ABCya, which engage the students and support my instruction at the same time. Students will also get the opportunity to manipulate experiments on the Mystery Science web site.
